Susan DiGregorio Obituary

On August 11, 1945 our beloved Susan was born in Boston, Massachusetts and introduced to the world as Susan Beth Stolman, daughter of Allie and Ruthie Stolman, and baby sister of Margie (Stolman) Alberti. Susan’s roots began on Anderson Street in The West End (Beacon Hill) in a row of brick apartment buildings just across from her grandparents, Bucky and Becky Lewis, whom she loved to visit daily. Always staying close to her sister, her protector, together they had a unique diverse upbringing and tight knit friends that were like family — where everyone kept their doors unlocked, children played in the cobblestone streets, and kids or adults gathered in each others parlors around their 12” black and white televisions to watch the “Howdy Doody Show” or “The Milton Berle Show”. At around 8 years old Susan moved to Wales Street in Dorchester where she lived for close to another 8 years. A Jewish neighborhood enriching this young city girl with a deep sense of community — where she made some of her earliest friendships that lasted a lifetime. After spending their entire lives in Boston, Susan’s parents moved to the beach on Kimball Ave in Revere where she would spend her remaining years of school at Revere High, graduating with the class of 1963. She jumped right in with the in-crowd — bonding with girlfriends who became instant “sisters” — all of them sharing and celebrating life together for nearly 60 years. Susan was an avid music lover, spending nights out with “dinner + a show” to see all the famous singers and bands perform at popular locales. A knockout with her expressive blue eyes, brilliant smile, petite frame and lively energy — at age 25 while out dancing she met a tall, dark, handsome man, David DiGregorio aka Donnie who she nicknamed “Greg”. They quickly fell in love and five months later eloped. One year after getting married Susan gave birth to their first daughter, Marcy DiGregorio — a Registered Dietitian living in California; and the following year Susan gave birth to their second daughter, Amy DiGregorio — a jeweler and handbag designer living in Santa Barbara. Susan and family moved to Pond Street in Stoneham where she lived for 25 years. Sunday mornings were a favorite pastime with her family of four lounging around the living room with the Boston Globe after a big breakfast…while Sunday afternoons were spent hosting or visiting her husband’s family for a big Italian feast. Quality time with family was the norm — annual summer road trips throughout New England, car trips down to Florida to visit her retired parents, and special occasions or holidays celebrated with her entire family — including her husband’s entire family whom deeply loved her, and she them. Susan had a handful of office jobs through the years — Stolman Printing, her Dad’s shop next to “The Garden” on Causeway Street; The Stoneham Independent where she spent most of her career as a typesetter; and her favorite, Northeast Airlines. Her job with the airlines afforded many travel opportunities all over the world before getting married — she tangoed in Buenos Aires, shopped in London, and took her parents on a tour all around Israel. Once Susan’s daughters finished college and settled down in California, she retired to Naples, Florida. As always she made fast friends, and with her husband they joined a bowling league, played cards, dined out, took dog walks around the lake, lounged at the pool, and enjoyed many cruises to tropical countries and islands. She had a strong appreciation for the arts, and was very artistic herself in all mediums but found her love and talent with oils and acrylics while living in Naples, where she took many art classes and enjoyed painting with her neighbor. Also an avid reader, nothing delighted her more than curling up with a good book. Years later, Susan and her husband took their last trip together, a Mediterranean cruise, before he became very ill and passed away. Although grief-stricken, she proved her independence by joining a widows group, and continuing to travel — a visit with friends in Ireland, and a bunch of trips with her daughters. A couple years later Susan reunited with Ernie her high school sweetheart. From their balcony on Revere Beach she loved catching the stunning pink and orange sunrises where she spent her summers before returning down to Naples each winter. An early bird she was — it was never too early for those morning FaceTime calls that always included a silly story turning into hysterical laughter. One of Susan’s favorite roles was being a Mother. A natural caregiver always offering advice, and doing everything she possibly could for her daughters with endless love. She always made sure they never had to ask for a thing throughout her lifetime — she selflessly gave, it was just her way. She spoke so proudly of the confident, successful girls she raised, and they often let her know she was their biggest hero. Susan had such a strong bond with her own Mother, and shared that same closeness with her own children. Susan embraced and cherished all of life’s gifts. We are heartbroken to lose one of the world’s finest, kindest, funniest, most generous, loyal and gorgeous souls anyone could ever wish to meet. We miss her immensely. Her final hours were spent with her immediate family — her two daughters, Marcy and Amy; and her sister, Margie. They reminisced with stories, sang songs, laughed, cried, kissed, hugged, held hands, said their final thank you’s and goodbyes…until Susan took her final breath, soaring off with an abundance of Love into her next Big Life… Susan’s ashes will be scattered, upon her request, with her late husband of 42 years, and with her parents. Due to Covid-19 we are holding off on her Celebration of Life (for now) and will keep everyone posted as soon as we have more freedom to honor her memory — even if it takes a year or more, it will happen. Donations may be made to The Salvation Army. For all who got to love and laugh with Susan, you now have another Beautiful Angel watching over you.
